November 14, 2010 – Hiking in Lynn Woods
34 children from Zumix and East Boston Neighborhood Health Center, 8 ICO volunteers and 6 agency reps descended on Lynn Woods last Sunday, Nov 14th for a day of hiking, exploring Dungeon Rock and climbing Stone Tower! Lynn Woods is a 2200 acre nature reserve with great trails and incredible history just 20 minutes from downtown Boston.
We were greeted at the Pennybrook Road entrance by 3 volunteers from the Friends of Lynn Woods, Rich, Yetti and Dan, and their little dog, Ginger, who were all kind enough to map out our route, open up Dungeon Rock and Stone Tower, lead multiple tours into "the dungeon" and share stories of pirate legends and lost treasure! It was a great day with very accomodating temperatures in the mid 50's. Rich kicked our day off with a brief history of the woods. Then onto our first stop at "magic rock". 1/2 of this rock is over 600 million years old and the other 1/2 is over 400 million years old! Dungeon Rock was our next stop and our picnic destination. Yetti provided a history of the rock and shared the legend of the pirate who was buried with his treasure in the cave below the rock during an earthquake. Dan then proceeded to lead multiple tours of 7-10 people into the cave with flashlights and more history. While the tours were being conducted, lunch was being made and rock climbing tours were underway. After our group photo shoot, we hiked over to Stone Tower where we all climbed the spiral stairway to the top to be rewarded with wonderful views of the surrounding area including the Boston Skyline. We were then off again for a hike to Steel Tower where we rested and had a snack. For our final return hike, a litter scavenger hunt was conducted and the kids found it great fun to hunt down pieces of litter left along the trail. Before getting back to the bus, we had a final stop at Penny Brook where the kids enjoyed walking on the rocks and poking around in the stream. We did a closing circle and the kids shared their favorite part of our hike which ranged from descending into the cave, to rock climbing, to the views from Stone Tower and, believe it or not, picking up the litter. :) Great kids, great volunteers and an all around great day outdoors!
