Trip / October 2, 2010 – Apple Picking at Shelburne Farms

Saturday was a gorgeously cool, crisp day. Fall has definitely arrived in Boston! It was a perfect day for apple picking and that's what 13 youth from St. Peter's Teen Center and several volunteers, including four great first timers, spent the day doing. Shelburne Farms was incredibly welcoming and in addition to our planned apple picking, they provided us with complimentary cider donuts and apple cider, caramel apples for the youth, a hayride, and pumpkins! We started the day with a cider treats and a hay ride and luckily all 21 of us fit on one cart! We challenged the youth to find pumpkins no bigger than their head, and my some of them think they have very big heads! The group split into two smaller groups to search the fields for the perfect Macintosh, Macoun, and Cortland apples and all left with the field with bulging bags. A closing circle survey said that many of those apples were going into pies, applesauce or straight into bellies. Shelburne Farms was a great place to spend the day and I'm already looking forward to doing it again next year!

Happy Autumn!
