Kayaking with JRI - September 22, 2018
First Trip with the Justice Resource Institute (JRI)!
Boston ICO and JRI met at Hopkinton State Park in Hopkinton, MA for a lovely day of kayaking on the reservoir on September 22, 2018. ICO trip Leader Rachael, along with ICO volunteers Nicki and Sarah, met the group of 9 students and 3 teachers at the park’s boat launch at little bit after 10 am.
The excitement was apparent as the kids hopped out of the van. We found a group of picnic tables to have an opening circle and talk about the day. We then walked to the back to the launch where we grabbed the life jackets and the kayak representatives fitted everyone in double kayaks. There were two boats of students only, while all the other students got to ride with an adult. It was partially sunny and quite breezy, which gave way to some choppy currents along the way. There were lots of small islands which were fun to paddle around.
After everyone paddled for an hour and half, we headed back to land for lunch. The sandwiches and carrots were passed, with a few animal crackers and some apples on the side. We all chowed down, threw a frisbee around in the grass and decided to explore the hiking trails on the north side of the park. The group ventured through the park and looked for animal tracks on the trails. We didn’t find many tracks, but did find a beautifully set up engagement party at the pavilion! Needless to say we did not stay to dance, but made our way back to the lake front to wrap up the day’s adventure.
A closing circle was conducted with a final round of snacks and water before all the students and teachers loaded back on the bus. I must say it was another great outdoor adventure! This was the firsttrip for ICO & JRI, so we hope there are many more for the future. Until we meet again….
